Five Tips To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Carbohydrates And Weight Gain - How Dropping Carbs Can Help You Lose Weight by Bill Nadraszky

Carbohydrates are one of the basic building blocks of food so they are a very important part of your diet and weight loss goals. Carbohydrates are in most of the foods that we eat from fruits and vegetables to breads and cereals. Foods that have no or nearly no carbohydrates are meats and oils as well as of course water.

There are two types of carbohydrates and the way that they affect your body is vastly different. One kind of carb, a complex carbohydrate such as we find in breads, rice and potatoes takes a long time to break down in your body and can be stored as fat fairly easily (like a few pieces of bread). The second kind of carb, the simple carbohydrate is found in fruits and sugar. Simple carbs in low amounts tend to be burned of pretty easily but of course as you take in large amounts of simple carbs (like a chocolate bar).

Now that oyu know about the two kinds of carbs it is important to restrict the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. You will now also notice whether you are more suceptible to eating those simple or complex carbs. I know that in my house I am the simple carb hoarder and my wife has a weakness for breads, esopecially when we go to the Olive Garden.

Most North American diets are based on fats and carbs with the majority of people getting probably half or more of all of their calories from carbohydrates. There is no way that our bodies can burn off all of these carbs so it is important to lower the amount of carbs in our diet and try to raise the protein (I can deal with that in another article) a bit so that we are storing less carbs as fats.

So this leads to the obvious question of how do we drop the carbs in our diet that can cause fat? Well there are a couple of ways to drop carbs. One way that I have dealt with before is by using some kind of carb blocker pill, a pill to stop your body from metabolizing some of the carbs that you eat. The other way to drop the number of carbohydrates in your diet is to make sure that you stop snacking and instead of having a bag of chips or a chocolate bar you have a small real meal, maybe Tuna and rice or a bowl of chili. Look at different kinds of small meals and you can get to the perfect eating system of six small meals a day instead of three giant meals and a few snacks.
