The Basics of Koi Fish

by Jonathan Powell

Although fish are not as cuddly as a dog or a cat, they can be great pets for people of all ages. While a fish tank is fun, some people prefer to have an outdoor fish pond, stocked with attractive fish. This pond not only provides a habitat for the fish to live in, but adds beauty to the home yard or garden. Koi are a good choice for many people looking to build an outdoor fish pond. Fortunately, there are many resources for koi fish information online and in stores.

Koi are native to Asia and are a member of the carp family. They were developed and domesticated by humans for use as pets and gifts. For many years they have been prized as ornamental and pets. A koi symbolizes love and friendship when given as a gift. Koi are now sold all over the world. They come in many attractive colors, including blacks, whites, blues, oranges, and combinations of colors. Koi varieties are often determined and sorted by color. Breeders have worked for decades developing beautiful color patterns of these fish.

A Koi's body is a typical "fish-shape", with a slightly flattened head. They have flat fins on the sides of their bodies, as well as a dorsal fin and tail fins. They have whisker like appendages on the front of their heads. These fish can adapt to a variety of conditions, including water of different temperatures. While this is great for owners who might live in a variety of areas, it also makes these fish pests if they should be accidentally released into the wild. Their ability to survive lets them take over an area almost completely and destroy native species of plants and animals. Due to this, koi are outlawed or strictly governed in some areas, so it is important that potential owners become familiar with the rules in their area before purchasing koi. Koi prefer a pond of at least a meter deep and are suited to eat a variety of foods. The best way to feed koi is to purchase a specified, nutritionally balanced food sold by a pet store or similar establishment.
